At the age of 14 he lost his mother, and left home. At 16 he joined the Navy, and served 4 years in the South Pacific during WW II. While on shore leave, he met, and married Ruby Silvia Koenig. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and watching documentaries about animals and history. He had a great sense of humor, and a positive attitude throughout his life.
