Westminster basketball: women move up one spot in Coaches’ Poll

After a 5-1 start to the season, the Westminster College women’s basketball team moved up one spot to No. 4 in the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Top 25 Poll that was released Tuesday. Westminster received 224 points in the first regular season poll of the season released by the NAIA national office.

The Griffins have now been ranked in the top 25 for 25 consecutive polls dating back to Dec. 12, 2011. They have also spent the past 14 polls within the top five positions. Westminster started this season with a No. 5 preseason ranking and has won five of six games to start the season with the only loss coming at No. 1 Vanguard (Calif.) on Nov. 16.

Vanguard sits atop the poll for the second straight release. The Lions, who reached the quarterfinals of last year’s NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship, received nine of 10 first-place votes and 250 points en route to their 30th top mention dating back to the 1999-2000 season.

The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences and independents.
