Duane Ray Slaughter"Old age is not for sissies"Our loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend, Duane Ray Slaughter, passed away at the age of 73, on December 8, 2013, surrounded by his family. Throughout his 68-year valiant struggle with type-one diabetes, he survived 15 heart attacks, 6-bypass heart surgery, 5 years of dialysis, celiac disease, gout, and cellulitis. Duane was born to Edward Greenwell Slaughter and Mary Eloise Pike Slaughter on July 27, 1940 in Salt Lake City, Utah. His first marriage was to Elaine Maughan (Trusty), August 9, 1963. He was later sealed to his "sweetheart", Carol Neilson Slaughter, on November 25, 1983 in the Jordan River Temple. Duane graduated from East High School and earned a degree from Utah State University in Industrial Education. He used his education in many fields including drafting, general contracting, teaching woodshop, metal shop and math at Woods Cross High School. Duane spent his life in the service of his family, friends and those around him. He served faithfully in many callings in the LDS Church including twenty plus years as a veil worker at both the Jordan River and Salt Lake Temples. Duane loved woodworking and created many interesting gadgets and projects for function and fun. No project that came to his garage was turned away, and no one ever left without learning a part of his craft. Like his father, he had a knack for organizing tools and other household items, whatever the need, whatever the problem. If he could solve it, he "wood." Many loved his "dry" sense of humor as no conversation was ever without a pun or anecdote. He loved train and was an avid collector of scale models. He shared this love with his children and grandchildren, and they looked forward to playing with him and the trains under the Christmas tree every year. The family would like to express their gratitude to the many healthcare professionals and facilities that have lovingly cared for Duane.Preceding Duane in death are his parents; son, Paul Raymond Slaughter; and grandson, Justin Richard Whipple. He is survived by his wife Carol; brother, Darrell Slaughter; sister, Lynnette Rogers; 7children: Janele (Kent) Whipple, Connie (Keith) Hicks, RaNae (Tom) Johnson, Dan (Pandora) Slaughter, Karen Slaughter, David (Amber) Slaughter, Mitchel Slaughter; 19 grandchildren; and 1 great-grandchild with 2 more on the way. A viewing will be held Thursday, December 12, 2013, 6:30 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 S. Redwood Rd. Funeral services will commence on Friday, December 13, 2013, 1:00 p.m. at the LDS chapel on 3040 W. Bernina Dr. (5825 S.) Taylorsville, UT with a viewing, 12-12:45 p.m. prior to services.
