Westminster basketball: Griffins dominate first half, cruise to win

The Westminster College women’s basketball team connected on 58 percent of its field goal attempts, canning 12, 3-pointers on the afternoon, helping the No. 4 ranked Griffins complete a season sweep of The College of Idaho by winning, 76-63, inside the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.

The Griffins (6-1) used a 12-0 run early in the game to grab a 12-3 lead then used treys from Amy Krommenhoek, Tia Pappas and Kelsi Wells in a nine-point surge to extend the margin to 23-10 midway through the half.

Leading 43-27 at the break, Alli Blake had three buckets in a 9-2 run to open the second half, extending the lead to 23 points before the hosts made a rally. Dayna Drager hit a pair of jumpers for the Yotes in a 9-0 run to get within 52-38, getting within 64-52 on a Drager trey with seven minutes remaining. However, Shelby Ellsworth converted a lay-up and Wells drained a three to push the lead back to 17, and Westminster cruised to the victory.

Ellsworth led the visitors with 18 points and eight rebounds, with Blake scoring 16 points. Alli Winters scored all 14 of her points in the first half, making 4-of-5 3-pointers on the afternoon.

Drager led C of I (4-6) with 16 points, with Aleah Lowber scoring a season-high 15 in the loss. The Lady Yotes, who made 18-of-28 field goals in the second half, forced 16 turnovers, but Westminster held a 30-20 edge on the glass.

The Griffins are now off until playing in Santa Clarita, Calif., on Dec. 27-28 in the Jersey Mike's Classic.
