Regulated pollution?

Your recent editorial, "In our opinion: Refinery should be allowed to expand," Dec. 12, is embarrassing. Suggesting "the oil has to be refined somewhere" is asinine given the unique pollution challenges we face due to our geography.

Second, 45 stable new jobs come at what expense to the health of our people? Just because they intend to use good practice in their expansion, doesn't mean it won't make our air quality worse. Does that mean we should let them buy carbon credits, pollute much more, and still be within regulation?

We need solutions and media support, not uniformed apathy. You can't expect people to stop driving their cars to solve the problem. Capitalism assumes people act in self-interest. The government and the media are supposed to help protect the greater good with laws, incentives and educated articles.
