UVU basketball: Wolverines play final non-conferene game Saturday

A rematch of an earlier road contest is on tap for Utah Valley as it hosts Tennessee Tech on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. MT in the UCCU Center. The Wolverines (5-7) were edged, 74-71, against the Golden Eagles (7-7) on Nov. 30 in Cookeville, Tenn.

Since that contest UVU has gone 3-3 in six games while TTU has gone 2-3. The Wolverines are playing for the first time since taking a narrow four-point loss to Summit League favorite North Dakota State on Monday.

In that game, Holton Hunsaker led all scorers with 22 points, hitting all 11 of his free throw attempts, with Keawe Enos adding 14 and Hayes Garrity 13. Tennessee Tech hasn’t played since Nov. 19, a 112-56 win over Hillsdale College.

“Tennessee Tech was too much for us in that first game in Cookeville,” UVU coach Dick Hunsaker said. “We’re going to have to play much better and improve our ability to handle their pressure and athleticism.”

In the earlier contest, Hayes Garrity led UVU with 18 points, and TTU’s Jeremia Samarrippas hit four 3-pointers on his way to 20 points to lead all scorers. Samarrippas hit two free throws in the final minute to give Tennessee Tech the lead for good. Both teams shot over 52 percent for the game with TTU hitting 57 percent (8-for-14) from the 3-point line.

On the season, Ty Allen averages 11.1 points per game to lead the Golden Eagles in scoring. For Utah Valley, three players are scoring north of 11 points per game: Garrity (11.9), Hunsaker (11.7) and Zach Nelson (11.6).

For both teams this will be the final tune-up before beginning league play next week. TTU goes to Tennessee State for its Ohio Valley Conference opener on Jan. 2, while UVU travels to Bakersfield in its WAC opener on Jan. 4. The Wolverines will play their first WAC home game on Jan. 11 against Grand Canyon.
