MIDVALE — A two-car accident connected to a shooting shut down northbound State Street for several hours Friday night.

A man and woman were driving in a pickup truck shortly after 6 p.m. when the female passenger suffered a fatal gunshot wound and the truck hit another vehicle near State Street and 7800 South, said Unified police detective Jared Richardson.

Police said many unanswered questions remained Friday night and they had not classified the shooting as either a suicide or a homicide.

The truck and the car it hit went through a fence and stopped in a parking lot, Richardson said. Two occupants in the car were taken to an area hospital with minor injuries while the man driving the truck, who was not hurt, stayed on-scene to talk to investigators.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police were uncertain which way the truck was traveling and whether the gunshot or the crash occurred first, Richardson said.

Police closed northbound State Street at the site of the accident while they investigated. The road remained closed for several hours.
