CLINTON — A 4-year-old child was killed in a head-on collision in front of an elementary school Wednesday.
Just after 2 p.m., an SUV and a passenger vehicle hit head-on in front of Clinton Elementary School, 1101 W. 1800 North. Clinton Police Chief Bill Chilson said the passenger vehicle was in the wrong lane.
Investigators weren't sure if the vehicle had just pulled out of another business and was trying to pull into the school parking lot or why it was traveling in the wrong lane of traffic, Chilson said. There were no skid marks on the road prior to impact, he said. School had not yet let out for the day.
Two small children were in the passenger vehicle. One was killed, and the other was transported to a local hospital in fair to critical condition, Chilson said.
The male adult driver of that vehicle was critically injured, as was the female driver of the SUV, he said. Names of the victims were not immediately available.
Chilson said investigators did not know Wednesday whether the children were wearing seat belts or proper safety restraints.
The investigation into what caused the crash continued Wednesday evening.
Additional information will be posted as it becomes available.
