SALT LAKE CITY — Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Salt Lake has announced that Evelyn Salazar has been named Youth of the Year for 2014.
Evelyn, a 17-year-old senior at West High School, competed for the honor among candidates from other Boys & Girls Clubs in the area.
Youth of the Year is the highest award given to a member of the club, recognizing members for sound character, leadership skills and community service.
Evelyn will receive a $1,000 scholarship and the opportunity to represent Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Salt Lake at the state competition held in February. Each candidate received a scholarship of $500.
Youth of the Year is sponsored in part by the Sugar House Kiwanis Club and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Foundation.
“I am who I am today because of the Boys & Girls Club,” Evelyn said. “I now have a goal to be a first generation college student and because of the club, I can make that happen.”
