Vasilike P. Rekouniotis1916 ~ 2013Vasilike P. Rekouniotis beloved wife, mother and friend, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday April 10, 2013.She was born on January 1, 1916 to Panayioti and Panayiota Christopoulos in Zachlorou, Greece. Vasilike (Bessie) was the youngest of seven children. Her early years in Greece were difficult; she knew hunger, poverty and war. She came to America in 1950; she married Alexios V. Rekouniotis on March 28, 1951 in Salt Lake City. A Rose Park resident for 60 years, Bessie loved to cook, bake Greek pastries, sew and garden; she did all of these into her 90's, and was excellent at all of them. Her flower and vegetable gardens were well known by her friends and neighbors. Bessie was very proud of her Orthodox faith and her Greek heritage. She was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church, The Panahaikos Society, The Society of Athanasios Diakos and The Hellenic Cultural Association. She is survived by her son, Vasilios (Bill), and many nieces and nephews in Greece, Canada and Australia. Bessie was preceded in death by her husband Alexios, January 9, 1990, her mother and father, and her six siblings, Kosta, Christos, Sotirios, Yannis, Dimitrios and Maria. A viewing will be held on Sunday April 14, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Neil O'Donnell & Sons Mortuary, 372 East 100 South with a Trisagion service at 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Monday April 15 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 279 South 300 West. Interment will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery. A special thank you to the staff of VistaCare, especially Janet, Lissa and Tammy.
