Charles Seal Reed1921-2013Chick, age 91, passed away Thursday, April 11, 2013 of natural causes, surrounded by family. He was born August 13, 1921 in Salt Lake City, Utah to George Washington Reed and Ann Eliza Exile Seal. Chick married Joyce Braby in 1944; they later divorced. He married Beverly Keeley Schmutz in 1975. He said, "She was the best thing that ever happened to me."Chick graduated from West High School in 1939 and the University of Utah in 1944 in mechanical engineering. He also served in the Navy during WWII (1944-1946). He worked as a professional engineer and land surveyor, most recently at the physical facility plants of the University of Utah and Utah State University. He spent his time gardening, watching football, and loved to read. He always had a book in hand and enjoyed science fiction. He loved tennis and played into his 80's, and loved to eat ice cream every single day. While working at Utah State, he was an 'Official' Aggie Ice Cream taster.Chick could fix anything. He did major remodels in all his homes and kept all the family cars running, even if it required an entire new engine. He installed new sprinkler systems in many of his neighbor's yards and was the "go to" guy for any repair large or small.He is survived by his wife, Beverly; his sons, Charles B. Reed, David (Debbie) Schmutz, and Paul (Nicole) Schmutz; and his seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brothers George, Clyde, and Richard.Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 17, 2013, 12:00 noon at Emigration 4th Ward, 589 E. 18th Avenue. A viewing will be held Tuesday, April 16, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple and Wednesday from 10:45-11:45 a.m. prior to the services at the church.
