J. Garrett Nichols 12 June 1989 - 11 April 2013Garrett has set sail on peaceful waters. A 21-month struggle with metastatic fibro sarcoma has come to a courageous close in the arms of his loving brothers.Garrett began life in Salt Lake City, Utah, moved to Grand Blanc, Michigan at the age of one year. Surrounded by the Great Lakes and many trees, Garrett developed a love for sailing and climbing. Loving the outdoors he enjoyed 4-wheeling, camping, horse back riding, and running. In high school he competed in springboard diving, cross-country and pole vaulting. He developed a passion for high performance automobiles and knew all the specs. Garrett returned to Draper, Utah at age 17 years. He savored adventure, photography, oil painting, and hanging out with his brothers. He loved scuba diving, snow skiing and climbing with his family. Waterskiing became his love, along with his amazing fiancé Katelyn. Garrett's life was a demonstration of his cancer bracelet statement: "Expecto Patronum" (I desire a protector) "No Struggle No Strength".Garrett was a person who loved people. His capacity to love and appreciate just "being" with people was a gift that continued to grow through his illness. Thank you would be inadequate to express our gratitude to the hundreds of caring souls along this very difficult and painful voyage. Deep gratitude is sent to those at Huntsman & Utah Cancer Specialists who cared so lovingly for Garrett in so many capacities. You preserved his dignity and were ever concerned for his quality of life. Thank you to the many known and unknown who have prayed for and supported this valiant young man. We love you and Garrett loves you! Max, Sam & Noah, you are the best brothers on the planet! Thank you for endlessly standing by, caring for, and sharing your time and love with Garrett. That's what brothers do best.Garrett is survived by his amazing fiancé Katelyn Alexa Summerhays, his loving parents Jeff & Jane Nichols, his awesome brothers Max, Sam & Noah, beautiful grandparents Sam & Sharon Nichols and William and Barbara Cooper, loving aunts, uncles, cousins & countless friends and admirers. Garrett was preceded in death by his uncle Steven Nichols.A celebration of life and visitation will be held Tuesday April 16, 2013 at Larkin Sunset Gardens 1950 East 10600 South Sandy, Utah from 6-8 pm. Funeral services will be held Wednesday April 17th, 2013 at the LDS Chapel located at 573 East and 13800 South Draper, Utah at 1:00 pm, with a viewing from 11:30 - 1:00 prior to the service. An internment will follow at Larkin Sunset Gardens. Wear your brightest colors for the bon voyage!
