USU athletics: 45 Aggie student-athletes receive winter academic all-WAC honors

The Western Athletic Conference announced its winter all-academic teams Thursday, and Utah State had 45 student-athletes recognized from gymnastics, men’s and women’s basketball, and men’s and women’s indoor track and field.

Of its 45 academic all-WAC selections, Utah State had 18 student-athletes from women’s indoor track honored and 15 from men’s indoor track, along with five from both gymnastics and women’s basketball, and two from men’s basketball.

Utah State led the WAC with its 45 all-academic honorees, while Denver was second with its 43 honorees. Seattle was third with 42 academic all-WAC performers, followed by New Mexico State (37), Idaho (30), UTSA (25), Texas State (19), San Jose State (17), UT Arlington (16) and Louisiana Tech (5).

USU’s 15 men’s track honors were the most in its sport in the WAC, while women’s basketball tied for first with its five honorees. Women’s track ranked second with its 18 academic all-WAC recipients.

Highlighting Utah State’s honorees is senior track athlete Stephanie Burt, who has now earned academic all-WAC honors eight times in her career, while fellow track athletes Hollie Bosworth and Kyle McKenna each earned their seventh academic all-WAC honor and track athlete Tyler Killpack earned his sixth academic all-WAC honor.

Student-athletes who are earning academic all-WAC honors for the fifth time include track athletes Brittany Bushman, Keeley Eldredge, Kylie Hirschi and Eric Shellhorn. USU student-athletes earning their fourth all-WAC honor include track athletes Bri Campbell, Sam Hawkins, Silas Pimentel and Ashley Robison, and women’s basketball players Pualei Furtado and Jenna Johnson. Three-time honorees include women’s basketball player Jennifer Schlott, gymnasts Paige Jones and Christina Nye, and track athletes Nic Bowens, Laycee Elliott, McKenzie Johnson, Chris Martinez, Dan Mosman, CJ O’Neal and Cree Phillips Taylor.

Of the 45 USU student-athletes to earn winter academic all-WAC honors, 35 are receiving the accolade for at least the second time.

To be eligible for the winter academic team, a student-athlete must have completed one academic year, have at least a 3.00 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s contests.
