Obituary: SYMES, HERBERT

Herbert A. Symes Aug. 3, 1940 April 16, 2013Herbert Arthur Symes died peacefully at home from lung cancer on April 16, 2013, surrounded by his family who he loved dearly. Herb was born August 3, 1940 to Kenneth Edward Symes and Ila Fay Larsen Symes in Salt Lake City, Utah. He grew up in the Sugar House area with his sister Cherie, brothers Glade and Lynn, and many friends. Herb married Gwen Nielsen on June 16, 1962 in Salt Lake City. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with friends and family last year. Their marriage was solemnized on April 3, 2013 in the Jordan River Temple. Herb had two wonderful children, Carole and Matthew Troy, and six grandchildren who brought much joy to his life. Herb had the unique gift of remembering friends and events and had stories of an adventurous life from a young age which he loved to tell again and again. He was artistic and tried his hand in carving ducks, oil painting, pottery, pencil sketches, and working with wood. He loved to build pies which he shared with everyone. His passion was golf and he will miss his golfing friends here and in Mesquite, Nevada. Herb was generous, giving, honest, funny, friendly, sometimes cranky, creative, helpful, loving, and loyal to life-long friendships. Herb is survived by his wife, Gwen; daughter Carole and her children Isaiha, Makala, and Elijah; son Matt and his wife Christy, and their children, Courtney, Logan, and Kylie; sister Cherie (Dennis) King; brothers Glade (Kathy) Symes and Lynn Symes. Herb was proceeded in death by his parents, Ken and Fay, and by in-laws Coralie and Jerry Price, Sharon Symes, and Bonnie Boren. Our thanks to the doctors and medical assistants at Jordan Valley Hospital and Utah Cancer Specialists. A special appreciation to Dr. Justin Call for his compassion for Herb and his family during this difficult time. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday April 23, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary, 1950 East 10600 South, Sandy, UT. Viewings will be held on Monday night from 6:00-8:00 PM and also from 9:30-10:45 AM prior to services at the mortuary. Interment at Larkin Sunset Gardens Cemetery.
