ST. GEORGE — At the track state championships next month, Cedar and Ogden’s girls teams figure to be the front-runners in the quest for the 3A title. After the two competed against each other last weekend at the Dixie Invitational, the early edge certainly goes to Cedar.

Led by a strong meet from Aimee Bryson — whose 400-meter performance is the third-best in Utah this season — Cedar racked up 94 points to top second-place Desert Hills and third-place Ogden.

Despite her team finishing third, Ogden’s Sarah Feeny enjoyed one of the best two-day performances of anyone in the entire state all season. Not only did the junior win the 800, 1,600 and 3,200, but she did so with ridiculously fast times.

Her 4:53.06 time in the 1,600 is tops in Utah this season, as was her 10:37.37 time in the 3,200. Feeny’s 2:18.10 time in the 800 meters is the fourth-best mark in Utah.

Feeny wasn’t the only athlete who impressed on the girls side. Along with Bryon’s great time in the 400, Enterprise’s Riley Lyman turned in a top-three time in the 300 hurdles.

A pair of sprinters also had very strong meets. Emery’s Ashlynn Allred ran the 100 meters in 12.41, the third-best time in Utah this season, while Cedar’s Kayla Shakespeare wasn’t far behind at 12.55, the fifth-best mark.

On the boys side, Desert Hills easily captured the team title ahead of second-place Dixie. Brad Wulfenstein won both the 110 and 300 hurdles for the Thunder, while teammate Blake Kvarfordt won the shotput and discus. Kvarfordt’s discus throw of 151-05 is the fifth-best throw in Utah this season.

There were several other multi-event winners, with Dixie’s Chris Whetten winning the 100 and 200 meters and Delta’s Logan Smith claiming the long jump and high jump.

Just as Feeny dominated the distance events on the girls side, so did another Ogden runner on the boys side. Jordon Cross won the 3,200 in a time of 9:15.62, the second-best mark in the state.
