OREM, Utah — Utah Valley University scored in every inning in taking care of Chicago State, 15-3, and completing a four-game sweep of the Great West Conference series on Sunday at Brent Brown Ballpark. The game ended in seven innings due to the 10-run rule.
The Wolverines (18-21, 9-3) got contributions throughout the lineup and were led by three hits, including two doubles, from Colby Croft. Three other players had multi-hit days and five players drove in more than one run led by Kai Hatch’s three RBIs.
Stone Ramsey and Riley White each had two hits and two batted in with White also scoring four runs. Ramsey, Taylor Berg, Willie Pratt and Jordy Hart scored two times apiece.
Starting pitcher Danny Beddes picked up his first career win, lasting into the sixth and allowing one earned run (three total) on just four hits while striking out five.
“Danny pitched great. Every one of his runs should not have scored and he could have had a shutout,” head coach Eric Madsen said. “It was great to score in every inning too. That’s something we haven’t done in a long time. We’ve stressed for the kids to stay in it and keep the energy level up and we did that today.”
Utah Valley scored twice in the opening inning, getting an RBI single from Hatch and an RBI double into left-center by Croft.
After the Cougars (6-30, 3-13) tied it with two runs in the top of the second, the Wolverines answered with five in the bottom of the inning. UVU sent nine hitters to the plate and had RBI singles from Ramsey, White, Hatch and Croft.
Utah Valley added another run in the third and two more in both the fifth and sixth. In the sixth, Greyson Bogden had a pinch-hit single and later scored on Spencer Gothberg’s pinch-hit, two-run single that also plated White.
Eric Hall (1-8) took the loss for Chicago State who had two hits and two RBIs from William Munoz.
The Wolverines play their final nonconference game of the season Tuesday when BYU makes the short trip to Brent Brown Ballpark. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. MT. From there, UVU will play a key Great West series at Northern Colorado starting Friday at 3 p.m.
