AUSTIN BROWER, Westlake, track: This junior distance runner had another outstanding meet at the Davis Invitational on Saturday, not a surprise considering he's been outstanding all season.
Coming off victories in the 800 and 1,600 meters at the Desert Hills Invitational earlier this month, Brower finished second in the 800 meters and fifth in the 1,600 meters at the prestigious Davis Invite.
Brower's time of 1:55.54 in the 800 meters is the fifth-fastest time in Utah in 2013. His 4:15.35 showing in the 1,600 meters at Davis is also fifth best in Utah this year.
Brower finished sixth in the 4A 1,600 meters as a sophomore last season, and he should have no problem eclipsing that performance this season.
CERINA ARAGON, East, softball: It isn't just Cerina Aragon's athletic ability that makes her a versatile athlete for the East Leopards.
The sophomore started the season playing predominantly outfield. But when the team needed help at other positions, she stepped up.
"She's a standout player, a good athlete, and solid on the classroom, said East head softball Marianne Bullis. "But what I am really looking forward to is watching her leadership develop."
Aragon may be young but she is one of the Leopards' hardest working players and most determined competitors. She is a multi-sport athlete and very involved in school activities.
"She is just a real vocal leader," said Bullis. "She is very feisty and she just finds a way to get things done."
