LOS ANGELES — The University of Utah golf team slid to 12th place after the second day of play at the Pac-12 Conference Championship at the Los Angeles Country Club. Sophomore Brandon Kida posted the Utes' best round of the day with a six-over 76.
Junior Daniel Engle enters Wednesday's final round tied for 32nd in the individual standings at eleven-over 221 (67-74-80). Kida is a just a shot behind at 222 (72-74-76).
SUU GOLF: At San Antonio, Taylor Schone shot 3-under par 69 to lead Southern Utah out of a 14-stroke hole and into the lead heading into Wednesday's final round at the American Sky Conference Golf Championship.
The Thunderbirds were in fourth place at 8-over par 296, 14 shots behind Houston Baptist heading into Tuesday's round, but combined to shoot 3-under par 285 on Tuesday to overtake the Huskies, who followed Monday's 282 with a round of 300 on Tuesday.
With a two-round total of 5-over par 581 the Thunderbirds hold a one-shot lead over HBU heading into Wednesday's final round.
Sacramento State, which had the low team round of the day at 284, was tied with Northern Colorado in third place at 588, 17 shots off SUU's pace, while Utah Valley was another stroke back at 589.
WESTMINSTER GOLF: At Missoula, Mont., the Westminster College men's and women's golf teams each recorded a third-place finish at the Frontier Conference Championships that concluded on Tuesday. Neither team changed position after the completion of the third round at the Larchmont Golf Course.
The Westminster men shot 295 in the final round to gain ground on the leaders, but still finished 12 strokes off the pace with a total score of 907. Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) held on to take the title with a final-round 302 to finish at 895 for the tournament. Carroll (Mont.) placed second at 897 after shooting 296 on Tuesday.
Dane Jensen paced the Griffins with his total of 223 to place tied for fifth.
The Griffin women came away with a third-place finish after the team shot 340 on the afternoon and finished the tournament with 1,022 strokes. Lewis-Clark State finished at 961 to win the title and put them 24 strokes in front of Rocky Mountain (Mont.) in second.
Jenteal Jackson shot 81 in the third round to place seventh with a three-round score of 245 in her final collegiate event.
BYU, SUU SOFTBALL: At Provo, BYU (28-23, 15-5 PCSC) ended Southern Utah's (16-32, 9-6 Big Sky) season with identical scores of 8-0 in a doubleheader.
BYU's Coco Taualii had four RBIs in the first game and Megan Arnold had three in the second game.
UVU, WSU SOFTBALL: At Orem, the Utah Valley softball team swept Weber State by overcoming a 2-0 deficit in the bottom of the sixth to win 3-2 in eight innings. The Wolverines won the first game 7-1. UVU tied its record for wins in a season and Josi Summers set a record for strikeouts in a game with 13.
UTAH RUGBY: Blake Burdette posted on Facebook at the end of April that he was resigning as the head coach of the University of Utah's rugby team.
Burdette was a three-time All-American rugby player for the U. between 2003-2006 (he was an honorable mention his freshman year) playing both prop and sometimes moving to center. During his senior year he was also "The Utah Man" on coach Urban Meyer's University of Utah football team. Blake went on to play hooker for the New York Athletic Club and started at that position for the United States Eagles in the 2007 World Cup held in France. Burdette returned to the U. to assist coach Dave Anderson in working with the forwards in 2007-08 and then took over as head coach the following year.
As a player, Blake's Utes went 61-12 and made it to the Final Four of the 2007 National Collegiate Championships and the Championship Game of the 2006 Tournament, losing to California both times. As a coach, Burdette's teams posted an 83-25-1 record and went to the National Championships every year, losing to California in the Final Four in 2011. Blake, working with Jason Pye, also took the University of Utah to the National Collegiate Championship in sevens play in 2010 when they defeated California 31-26 in the finals.
WESTMINSTER BASKETBALL: Westminster College has signed SLCC sophomore guard Katie Richens.
Richens, a 5-foot-8-inch tall guard, was the second-leading scorer for the Bruins last season at 9.1 points per game. She averaged 5.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game for SLCC in the 2012-13 campaign.
Richens was a Second Team All-Region 18 selection last year and helped lead the Bruins to a second round appearance in the Region 18 Tournament with an overall record of 19-11.
BYU TENNIS: BYU's No. 39 ranked men's tennis team received an at-large bid to the 2013 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships on Tuesday.
The Cougars (21-6) will play a first round match against Memphis (14-7) on Friday, May 10, in Oxford, Miss. The other first round match has Ole Miss (15-8) hosting Lehigh (18-5) with the winners advancing to the second round on Saturday.
