Richard Davis states that "Guantanamo is a blot on our national character" because enemy detainees are still being held there (May 8). The Geneva Convention does not apply to those at Guantanamo because, under the Geneva Convention, when a country agrees to stop fighting, prisoners are returned to their homes — as in Germany in WWII. The POWs (we had about 371,000 in the United States) were returned to Germany to help rebuild their country.

In the war on terror, there is no country to cease fighting. We are fighting an ideology that has not surrendered. The detainees, if released, could go back and join another terrorist group and fight again against our country. This has already happened. Some detainees have been recaptured after having been released.
