OGDEN — A convicted child molester is now facing a possible prison stint, accused of wielding a long rifle in the heist of an Ogden credit union last month.
Police say Finis Ray Byrd, 71, wore a welder's jacket, a black ski mask and a yellow hard hat when he walked into the Wasatch Peaks Credit Union on April 6 brandishing a long rifle.
Despite the elaborate disguise, multiple agencies that included the Ogden Police Department, its gang unit, the Weber-Morgan Narcotics Strike Force and the FBI worked to track Byrd as the possible culprit.
A search warrant served Thursday at his home unveiled cash and other items that police say link him to the robbery. Investigators say they also found additional firearms at the home.
Byrd was booked into the Weber County Jail for investigation of aggravated robbery and three counts of possession of a firearm by a restricted person.
In 1997, Byrd was charged with sexual abuse of a child, a second-degree felony. He ultimately pleaded guilty, was sentenced to a year in jail and ordered into sex offender treatment. His probation was terminated in 2001.
