EVANSTON — Police identified the man shot and killed by police officers after a high-speed chase in Evanston, Wyo., as 43-year-old Naim "Keith" Labaki.
Police responded to a call of shots fired at 2:08 p.m., Saturday. Labaki, 43, fired one shot in front of his parent's home after a dispute, Evanston police said. A neighbor reported that Labaki was living with his parents at their home. No one was injured. Labaki left the residence in a white 1995 Ford Explorer.
He then went into Sportsworld, less than a mile away, and ordered an employee to give him another weapon, according to police. The employee said Labaki pointed a rifle at him, demanded a gun and said the government was after him.
The employee would not give Labaki a weapon, according to a news release from the Evanston Police Department. As he was leaving, Labaki fired a shot into the store. No one at the store was injured.
Evanston Police and Unita County officers spotted Labaki's SUV driving at a fast speed on Highway 150 at 2:39 p.m., the release said.
Officers in pursuit said they saw the driver holding a rifle above the steering wheel, pointed at one of the officers.
Labaki, still moving at a fast speed, lost control at the I-80 intersection, hitting the sidewalk and spinning, Evanston officers said. An officer in an unmarked Evanston Police car hit the rear side of the car to stop it from moving farther.
Police said Labaki pointed a rifle from inside the SUV at an Evanston officer. An Evanston Police officer and deputy with Uinta County Sherrif's Office then shot Labaki.
Police did not say how many shots hit Labaki. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation is looking into the Saturday's events.
