Irene Nellie Alberta Thelin Smith Beloved Grams1921 ~ 2013Our sweet dear Grams quietly passed away on May 19, 2013, surrounded by her loving family. Mom was born January 9, 1921 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada to Victor Emanual Thelin and Elizabeth Kemshall. She married Grant B. Smith on March 17, 1943 in the Cardston, Alberta Temple. They emigrated to the United States in 1954. They were divorced in 1972. Five children were born to Grant and Irene, and they were the love of her life: Sandra Nadine (Lauri) McCreary (deceased), Vada Kathleen (Larry) Hunter, Dana Grant (Linda) Smith, Randall Alan (Terry) Smith, and Nancy Lee (Tom) Seiler. She was so proud of her 20 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren.Mom was a true homemaker in every sense of the word. Her cooking and sewing skills were untouched. She was famous for the dishcloths she knitted. She worked hard all of her life and never regretted a minute. She retired from working at the Utah State Hospital in Provo, Utah at age 65. Unwilling to be idle, she began a new career at Provo Craft, retiring at age 79. Tole painting became her new skill, and concerts became her new pastime. George Strait, Garth Brooks, Reba, Vince Gill, Neil Diamond, she was there and loving every minute. Steve Young and the 49ers became her beloved football team, even traveling to San Francisco to watch him play. After all was said and done, two things remained constant in her life-the love of her family and her testimony of our Savior, Jesus Christ. She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many positions throughout her life. She loved having her Visiting Teachers and Home Teachers come visit. Our family thanks you for your service to Mom. We also express our heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff of Horizon Home Health and Hospice for their tender loving care in helping Mother fulfill her wish to pass peacefully and with dignity in her home with her family.Irene was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, her daughter, Sandi, and her grandson, Cory Larry Hunter.Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 29 at 11:00 a.m. at the Hillcrest 23rd Ward, 700 North 350 West, American Fork, with a viewing at 10:00 a.m. Interment at American Fork Cemetery under the direction of Anderson & Sons Mortuary.
