Major General John Louis Matthews 1932 - 2013John Louis Matthews passed away at Alta View Hospital in Sandy, Utah on April 30, 2013 from complications due to a fall. He was born on June 27, 1932 to Howard Poole and Eleda Garrett Matthews. He married Darlene Davis in the Salt Lake Temple on October 4th 1956. Darlene passed away on September 26, 1989. John married Janice Holbrook on June 27, 1990. John graduated from Bingham High School. He attended the Air Force ROTC at Brigham Young University and graduated with a bachelor's degree in geology in 1955. He received a master's degree in education administration in 1967. He became a fighter pilot upon graduation with his bachelor's. He rose through the ranks of the Air National Guard and was made a general officer to become Adjutant General of the National Guard of Utah.John was also an educator. He was a math teacher, principle of Dixon Jr. High School and Timpview High School. He also served faithfully in many callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His many callings included serving as a Bishop and in the Stake Presidency. He served a full time mission with his wife Janice for the Church in Massachusetts from 2001 to 2003. John served as a lifelong scouter.His life was filled with service to his family, community, country and other countries as he traveled the world. His example and leadership has influenced for good those who served with him and the youth he served as an educator and church leader. He is loved and will be missed.John is survived by his wife Janice, brother Howard, daughter Steffany, son Michael John, son Craig Louis, 5 step children; daughter Kathy Barlow, daughter Debbie Raddack, daughter Brenda Riddle, daughter Joan Lepine, son Jason Barlow, 24 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Darlene and his parents.Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm on Monday, May 6, 2013 at the Crescent Ridge Stake Center, 1265 East 11000 South, Sandy, UT. A viewing will be held Sunday evening from 6-8pm at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 East 10600 South in Sandy and on Monday from 11:30am to 12:30pm prior to the services at the church.
