SALT LAKE CITY — Police and firefighters responded to a house fire Wednesday and arrested a man suspected of assaulting his wife.
Firefighters arrived just before 9 a.m. at 377 N. 800 West and found smoke and flames coming from the ground level of the two-unit home. All tenants were evacuated before crews arrived, and some were on the front porch trying to extinguish the fire with a garden hose, Salt Lake fire spokesman Jasen Asay said.
Fire crews quickly extinguished the blaze, which they believe started in the front room of the ground-level unit. The apartment sustained severe fire, smoke and water damage.
A woman in one apartment told firefighters her husband had assaulted her, and Salt Lake police officers were notified, Asay said.
Daniel Doe Ivins, 33, was booked into Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of domestic violence. His wife sustained a cut lip Wednesday in the dispute with Ivins, according to a Salt Lake County Jail report, and had evidence of a black eye and other bruises resulting from previous altercations.
Ivins was also interviewed by arson investigators, who will determine whether to pursue criminal charges connected to the fire. The cause of the blaze was still under investigation.
