Reuben Lyle Hurst1921 ~ 2013Reuben Lyle Hurst, 91, a resident of Eagle Mountain, Utah, passed away on June 5, 2013 while visiting family in Ridgecrest, California. He was born on October 15, 1921 in Richmond, Cache, Utah to Reuben and Gertrude Hurst.Lyle grew up in northern Utah and San Diego, CA where he was an active member of the ROTC and graduated from San Diego High School in 1940. Lyle married Dorothy Bateman on December 8, 1942 in the Salt Lake City Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Lyle served in the United State Marines during World War II fighting with the 4th Marine Division on Iwo Jima where he was injured. He was awarded the Purple Heart. They settled in San Diego where they spent over 50 years. They were happily married for 70 years. He was an active member of the LDS church serving as Boy Scout Leader, counselor in the bishopric, ward and stake Clerk, service missionary with Dorothy in the San Diego area as well as a temple worker in the San Diego Temple. He enjoyed fixing anything, building, and spending time with family and many close friends.Lyle is survived by his sister Helen Voet of Cypress, California; his daughters Lorraine Rice of Layton, Utah, Beverly Schwurack of Eagle Mountain, Utah, Joanne Cosgrove of Ramah, Colorado and son Russell Hurst of Ridgecrest, California; 15 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and other relatives.Lyle was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy, who passed away April 13, 2013, parents Reuben and Gertrude and his sister Arlene.A viewing will be held at the Greenwood Memorial Park and Mortuary in San Diego at 12:00 p.m., Friday, June 14, 2013. A graveside service will be held immediately following the viewing where he will be laid to rest with military honors.
