TAYLORSVILLE — High winds knocked a large tree onto a house Wednesday, crushing the roof and making the home uninhabitable until the damage is repaired.
The tree came down just before 7 p.m. at 1633 W. 6235 South, and firefighters responded within four minutes to ensure everyone was out and the home wasn't at risk of collapse, Unified Fire Cap. Clint Mecham said.
Wind gusts reached 75 mph in Taylorsville during the time as the Wasatch Front came under thunderstorm warnings.
Merideth Roberts was alone in the home when the tree fell and was uninjured Wednesday, reporting she heard the leaves rustling followed by a loud boom, glass shattering and heavy thuds as debris hit the floor.
"I had just left the front room," Roberts said. "I thought the front of my house fell in, it was really scary."
The house is a family home that was originally constructed in 1915 and has been added on to, Roberts said. She is now concerned about another tree in the backyard, but is grateful no one was injured.
Mecham said the tree was a large cottonwood, possibly more than 50 years old. The tree was knocked down when a powerful microburst ripped through the area, he said. There were no reports of other significant damage by the wind.
