Father drowns attempting to rescue son, police say

OTTER CREEK RESERVOIR, Piute County — A Cedar City father drowned Wednesday at Otter Creek Reservoir when he jumped out of a boat to rescue his son from the water.

Jeremy William Gunter, 35, jumped into the cold water to help his 12-year-old son about 4 p.m. Wednesday. The boy had jumped out of the boat to retrieve a hat that had blown away in the wind, Piute County Sheriff Marty Gleave said.

Gunter helped his son get back to the boat, but went under the water himself. His body was recovered from the reservoir about 10 p.m.

Neither father nor son were wearing life jackets, Gleave said.

"It was a heroic effort by this father," Gleave said.

Though temperatures are rising, the water in Utah's reservoirs remain cold, making life jackets important, Gleave said.
