John T. "Tim" Blanchard1934 ~ 2013Tim Blanchard of Sandy, 79, died on June 12, 2013, after battling cancer. Tim was born on Oct. 10, 1934, to Gladys Mauch Blanchard and Paul Blanchard. He grew up in Provo Canyon and in Salt Lake City, and he often entertained his nieces and nephews with tales of his swashbuckling childhood. He married his lifelong sweetheart, Jean Backman, on June 14, 1957, and they spent their life together in the Salt Lake area. When Tim was young, he did just about everything he wanted to. He enjoyed delivering the Salt Lake Telegram newspaper on his bike and meeting the characters who hung out at the newsstand. After an experiment with dynamite in Provo Canyon, his punishment (reward?) was cleaning the resulting rubble off the railroad tracks. As a young man Tim enjoyed sailing, and he was very proud of his work to help make the Great Salt Lake marina a reality. One of his fondest moments was graduating from the University of Utah and making his dad proud of him. Later, Tim and Jean became proud owners of Tennessee walking horses, often traveling to shows back East. Tim, an engineer, held a variety of jobs: Sperry Engineering Lab, Univac, the Air National Guard for 20 years, the State of Utah, Utah Power (Pacificorp), and then back to the Utah Division of Air Quality. Tim and Jean loved to travel. They made several trips to Alaska, Hawaii and Europe. One of his favorite trips included a helicopter tour over the volcano in Hawaii.Tim is survived by his wife Jean; by his sister, Barbara (Willard) Ferrell of Eagle River, Alaska; and by many nieces and nephews.A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 18, at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 10600 South 1700 East in Sandy.
