Unfortunately, Michael Gerson's liberal attack on honest patriots is very suave and persuasive ("Issuing threats for political purposes only poisons patriotism," June 14). Is defending the Constitution "not recognizably conservative" as he claims? Is seeing danger before it arrives "noxious, dishonest and dishonorable"? And who is "questioning the legitimacy of our government"? No one.
Instead, we are — and should be — questioning and decrying the illegitimate exercise of authority by leaders within our government. Being alert to these abuses is not "breathless exaggeration" as Gerson claims, for the facts, human nature and history speak for themselves — eventually. Wind, ominous clouds and thunder should be acknowledged, Gerson, not denied.
