Obituary: OLSON, JEAN

Jean LaRue Greene Olson1927 ~ 2013Dearest wife, mother, grandma and grandma great, Jean LaRue Greene Olson, 86 passed away on May 30th 2013 at home from a short battle with cancer.Jean was born on February 4th 1927 in the logging community of Portola, California. In 1932 she moved with her family to Utah and settled in Sandy. There she lived, as did most of the 'Greatest Generation', through the Depression years, fending their way and growing in character.Jean was a newspaper carrier for the Deseret News, throwing papers from horseback, her bike and walking. She was one of the first newspaper 'girls' and was distinguished as the Top Newspaper Carrier in Utah. Her efforts benefitted the War Bond sales as a top salesperson. As a member of the LDS Church, she served faithfully in many positions.She graduated with early leave from Jordan High School to attend the first classes of the newly formed LDS Nursing School in January of 1945 and returned to participate as valedictorian of her graduating class. Upon completion of nursing school and training as a nurse, she cared for servicemen at the VA hospital. It was there she met Edwin A. (Ted) Olson, for whom she cared and eventually married on May 26th 1949. They settled in Holladay, UT and raised two sons. Her career in nursing continued many years. She was always an incredible student with an insatiable desire to read, learn and maintain her 'tomboy' athletic abilities. As a great golfer up to her last year, she belonged to the ladies leagues of Mountain Dell, Glenmore Country Club and Alpine Country Club.Her family, along with many others, could always expect a quick and accurate medical response accompanied with the care and love of a generation that knew how to nurture others.She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Edwin Allred (Ted) Olson, sons, Doug (Barbara) and Kevin (Becky), six grandchildren and 13 1/2 great grand children, sister Nancy (Charles) Walker and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceded in death by parents Truitt and Bernice (Ballard) Greene, brothers, Gordon and Rodney.Many thanks to CareSource Hospice and those who loved and cared for Jean.Funeral services to be held on Mon., June 3, 2013 at the Salt Lake Olympus Stake Center, 2675 E, 4430 S, SLC, UT. Viewing at 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. with funeral services at 12:00 noon. Interment at Larkin Mortuary, Sandy, UT.
