Dean Bullock, the South Jordan man who is battling brain cancer, has been selected by online voters to compete in the Ironman World Championships on Oct. 12.
Bullock, whose story was told in the Deseret News last week, is an avid triathlete who dreams of qualifying for the big race — a fete he has narrowly missed in recent years. "If you get there, you've done something," Bullock said last week.
Since undergoing two brain cancer surgeries in the last 10 months, he has been unable to make another qualifying attempt. However, seven at-large entries are reserved for those who best exemplify the race's "Anything is possible" theme.
As explained in the Deseret News last week, candidates submit 90-second videos that can be viewed on the Internet, giving the public the opportunity to vote for their favorite athlete. The top vote-getters advance to the Ironman World Championship.
The 59-year-old Bullock received enough votes to win one of those seven slots.
Bullock, who underwent his second surgery last Thursday, plans to compete in the Oct. 12 race.
