Obituary: SMITH, JIM

Jim SmithMarch 21, 1930 ~ June 28, 2013James Grant Evans Smith, 83, of Pleasant Grove passed away peacefully on Friday, June 28, 2013. Jim was born March 21, 1930 in American Fork, Utah to Carl D and Urilda Evans Smith. He married Dorothy Holley on June 6, 1952 in Mapleton, Utah. Jim grew up in Pleasant Grove and attended schools there. He graduated from Pleasant Grove High School in 1948 where he played football and ran track. Jim worked many years in the insurance industry and was a highly successful agent for Bankers Life & Casualty. He also worked alongside his father Carl for many years in ranching, farming, trucking, and in the real estate business. Jim loved and cared for horses his entire life a highlight was winning the Intermountain Appaloosa Horse Club Championship on his horse O'Doll. Jim was loved and admired by almost everyone he knew and made friends with everyone he met. Jim donated much of the land for the Grovecreek Trailhead Park in Pleasant Grove which allows public access to Grovecreek Canyon and the Bonneville Shoreline Trail. Jim loved music from the time he was a young boy and performed, sang, and enjoyed listening to all kinds of music. He was an active member of the LDS Church. He is survived by his four children: Jimmy (Lisa) Smith, Michael "Joe" (Jayme) Smith, Liz (Scot) Nebeker, Carolyn (Tim) Guenzler; 13 grandchildren: Ashley Smith, Danielle Smith, Cassie Reis, Joshua Kasteler, Devon Cody, Bailee Nebeker, Griffen Scot Nebeker, Ceciley Taylor, Alec James Taylor, Lara Guenzler, Victoria Guenzler and Brett Guenzler. He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy H Smith and his brother, David E Smith. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in the Grovecreek Fifth Ward Chapel, 700 East 500 North, Pleasant Grove. Family and friends may attend a viewing Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Olpin Family Mortuary, 494 South 300 East, Pleasant Grove and at the church on Tuesday one hour prior to services.
