Obituary: THOMPSON, JANIE

Janie Thompson1921 ~ 2013Entertainer and BYU icon, Janie Thompson, died June 1, 2013 in Orem, UT. She was born in Malta, Idaho August 20, 1921 to J. Henry Thompson and Lora Harmon Thompson. Janie's siblings included: Dorothy Collier (Don, both deceased), John (deceased) and wife Etta, Joseph (deceased) and wife JoAn, Carolyn Lee (deceased) and husband Tom, Robert (Beth, both deceased), Samuel and wife Ann of Boise.Janie attended BYU. After graduating, she entertained throughout Europe in the U.S. Defense Department Big Band as the "girl singer." The boy singer was a young Tony Bennett. Janie joined the Ike Carpenter Band in Los Angeles where she performed on radio and television. She then served a full-time mission for the LDS Church in Wales. Janie, always a dedicated and faithful member of the Church, never wavered from her values and faith in Jesus Christ. After her mission she was called to serve on the MIA General Board for the LDS Church. She returned to BYU to head the Program Bureau where she created and lead groups on tours all over the world including Curtain Time USA, Young Ambassadors and The Lamanite Generation.In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Janie Thompson Endowed Music Scholarship at BYU. Multi-Stake Center, 352 North 900 East, Provo, Utah.Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 8, 2013 at the B.Y.U. Multi Stake Center, 352 North 900 East, Provo, Utah. Friends may call at the church Friday evening from 5-8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9-10:30 a.m. prior to services. Interment will be in the Orem City Cemetery. There will be an impromptu Celebration of Janie Thompson's Life held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday in the same building.
