James Lewis HaseltineNov. 7, 1924 ~ June 12, 2013James Lewis Haseltine died after a short illness in Bandon, Oregon on June 12, 2013. He was 88. Jim was born in Portland, Oregon on November 7, 1924, to William A. Haseltine and Clara Scharpf Haseltine.Jim was a World War II Veteran. After the war, he attended Reed College, the Portland Museum Art School, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Brooklyn Museum School in New York. He worked for the family's industrial supply firm, J.E. Haseltine & Co., as vice president. Jim was a long-time champion of Northwest arts and artists. He was a founding member of the Portland Arts Commission, served on the National Endowment for the Arts, and as national director of the Artists Equity Association. In 1961, he was named Director of the Salt Lake City Center for the Arts, and in 1967 became Executive Director of the Washington State Arts Commission. He helped lawmakers understand the true value of art and culture for the public.Jim was also an accomplished artist. His paintings and etchings are in the collections of The Portland Art Museum, Oakland Art Museum, and the University of Oregon Museum of Art. His book, "100 Years of Utah Painting," was published in 1965. His friends remember him as a kind and gentle man, a lover of words, especially puns and limericks.Jim Haseltine was predeceased by his wife Margaret Ann (Maury) Wilson, a well-known Northwest artist. He is survived by his brother, William J. Haseltine, his sister, Sally Haseltine Mann, and by his five children (Kay Haseltine, Suzanne Haseltine McDonald, Tom Haseltine, Jean Haseltine, and Angela Haseltine Pozzi), four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.Friends may donate to the charity of their choice in Jim Haseltine's memory.
