John Valentine Strebel1924 ~ 2013John Valentine Strebel, 89, passed away Sunday, August 11, 2013 due to complications following heart surgery. John was born in Salt Lake City on July 12, 1924 to George Friedrich and Margaretha Schwarz Strebel, and was the youngest of 14 children.After graduating from West High, he served as a Radioman 1st Class in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Upon his return, he attended and taught at LDS Business College where he met his lovely Kay. They were married on November 16, 1946. John's quick wit and cheerful smile served him well in his career as a merchant and successful businessman. Many were taught by his example of hard work, service, and fearless optimism.A devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, John served faithfully in many callings. He felt blessed to be a missionary with his wife in Nauvoo and at Temple Square. More recently, he and Kay enjoyed serving as ordinance workers in the Jordan River Temple.He is survived by his wife of nearly 67 years, Catherine Butters Strebel; children, Steve, Stan (Mary), Tim (Susan), Cathie (Kelly) Jones, Karen (Cavett) Eaton, Suzy (Kent) Winder; 31 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings; son-in-law, Scott Hathcock, daughter-in-law Lana Call Strebel; and two grandsons, Blake Strebel and Cameron Rider.Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at the Parkway Stake Center, 9894 South 2700 West, South Jordan, Utah with a viewing at the church from 10:30 11:30 a.m. A viewing will be held Friday, evening from 6:00 8:00 p.m. at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary located at 1007 West South Jordan Parkway (10600 S).
