WEST JORDAN — Shoe Carnival and Oquirrh Elementary launched a “Walk Tall, Respect for All” anti-bullying campaign Tuesday at the school. The shoe retailer distributed T-shirts that students will wear every Friday to promote anti-bullying in their community.
“Bullying is becoming very prevalent in elementary schools and can have far-reaching effects in kids’ lives and in the community,” said Tom Wells, Shoe Carnival regional manager. “Shoe Carnival wants to reward kids who are doing the right thing and standing up against bullying.”
Throughout the school year, teachers will nominate students who are caught being good, encouraging peaceful resolutions, friendliness, civility, acts of kindness and other types non-bullying behavior. At a monthly assembly, the school will recognize two students with $50 in Shoe Carnival reward cards.
“We are excited to partner with Shoe Carnival in rewarding students that show respect for all,” said David Butler, climate/culture specialist at Oquirrh Elementary. “Instead of dwelling on the negative side of bullying, we are rewarding students who are being positive, all in an effort to make a change for the better while they’re young.”
Students are encouraged to wear their “Walk Tall” T-shirts every Friday to remember the campaign and visually stand against bullying in and out of school. The class wearing the most shirts every week will be rewarded by Oquirrh Elementary.
