SALT LAKE CITY — United Way of Salt Lake is seeking volunteers to help stuff backpacks with school supplies for its annual Stuff the Bus campaign, which will distribute supplies to more than 5,000 children at neighborhood centers in Davis, Salt Lake, Summit and Tooele counties.

The centers are typically housed within schools to help students and their families access educational programs, social services and health resources.

Stuff the Bus is part of United Way’s annual Day of Caring event, where more than 4,200 volunteers from 105 local companies will spend thousands of hours completing more than 100 one-day volunteer service projects.

Volunteers will work to stuff backpacks with pens, pencils, paper, notebooks, rulers and crayons; package stuffed backpacks into boxes, and sort and count bags for each school; and load backpacks onto school buses and trucks for delivery to neighborhood center schools.

The event will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, at The Gateway, 18 N. Rio Grande St., outside the Grand Hall.
