Obituary: SILVER, RALPH

Ralph Taylor SilverDec. 22, 1923 ~ Aug. 27, 2013Our beloved father, aged nearly 90, passed away peacefully and suddenly of a cardiac arrest the morning of Aug 27, 2013, on Grand Lake, near Grove, Oklahoma, while attending a seaplane fly-in with his son, Gary. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah the fourth of five children of John Watson Silver and Lovina Boyes Taylor. He married Flora Ruth Stott on June 20, 1946, in the LDS Salt Lake Temple. He received his BS in electrical engineering from Utah State University and worked as a broadcast engineer designing and building radio and television stations in the Intermountain West, including building the first television station between the Mississippi and California. His culminating professional task was designing and building the infrastructure for KBYU TV & FM, of which he is considered a founding member. Ralph's college years were interrupted as he served from 1944 to 1946 in the US Navy. During WWII, he served aboard the battleship USS Idaho in the Philippines and was present in Tokyo Harbor at the end of the war. He and his bride were active, faithful members of the LDS church and both served in many callings, including a mission to the Atlanta Georgia Temple from 1987 to 1989. He is remembered as a wonderful Scoutmaster by those boys he mentored. He learned to fly in 1969 and retained a love of aviation his entire life. He and a colleague established Central Utah Avionics at the Provo Airport. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Ruth, for whom his love never wavered and for whom he cared during a chronic illness for over 12 years prior to her death. Also pre-decedents are his parents; his two sisters, Afton (Av) Osguthorpe, Ruth (Van) Neilson; his two brothers, John Taylor Silver, and Douglas Taylor Silver; two sons-in-law, Darrell Wimmer and Paul Sabin; two grandsons, Cory Carlile and Craig Carlile. Survivors include four children, Carolyn (Lee) Carlile of Genola, UT, Dr. Gary (Mary) Silver of Farmington, UT, Linda Wimmer of Orem, UT, and Gaylene Sabin (Spencer) Call of Spanish Fork, UT; 25 grandchildren and 60 great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held Saturday, Aug 31, 2013 at 12:00 a.m. at East Lawn Memorial Park, 4800 North 650 East, Provo, Utah.
