SALT LAKE CITY — Police have a witness to thank for leading them to a suspected bank robber.

The witness was at Zions Bank, 910 W. 2100 South, about 3:30 p.m. when he said he saw the man who robbed the bank leave in a cab with a woman, Salt Lake Police Sgt. Robin Heiden said.

The witness described the man as slender and white, wearing a red scarf, red shirt and a black baseball cap.

As the cab left, the witnesses followed it to the area of 1500 South and 1300 West, then called police and reported what house the two had entered, Heiden said.

"An alert witness for some reason took note of the male. He knew something was wrong," Heiden said.

Police responded and contained the area, then used a bullhorn to contact the people inside the house. Within about 30 minutes, four men and one woman came out and surrendered.

All five were in custody and being interviewed by police Tuesday evening to determine what they knew about the robbery, Heiden said.
