SPRINGVILLE - The BYU women's golf team remained in fifth place after its final day of the Hobble Creek Invitational behind another strong performance by Lea Garner.

"We had a rough start but finished well," BYU head coach Carrie Roberts said. "We have a lot to improve upon, but we did a lot of good things as well. This is a great start for the team and our upcoming season."

The Cougars shot a combined 20-over-par in the third round and a combined 63-over-par for the tournament. Sophomore Garner stayed on top throughout the tournament, finishing even in the third round and 1-over-par overall. Her win at Hobble Creek was her first college win as a Cougar.

"This is my first college tournament win, and it's awesome," Garner said. "The fact that it's our home tournament makes it even better. I'm proud of my team and myself. Hopefully we can continue to improve during this season."

Garner birdied her 2nd, 13th and 18th hole in the third round to add to a total of 12 birdies for the tournament.

"It's an awesome win for Lea," Roberts said. "I'm very excited for her. She played solid in this tournament, and it shows that she spent the summer working hard to prepare for the year. She was clutch down the stretch today, which shows what a solid player she is."

West Coast Conference foe San Francisco (+28) and Gonzaga (+34) finished the tournament at first and second place, respectively. Four of the top eight players of the tournament were from San Francisco.

Senior Annika Afoa Kahaiali'i tied for 13th place at 5-over-par in the third round and 14-over-par for the tournament. Carly Oldroyd finished tied for 31st, Selu Fotu tied for 53rd and Annie Yang finished tied for 56th place.

BYU will travel to Pullman, Wash., for the Cougar Cup on Sept. 23-24, at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club for the second tournament of the season.
