Chris Stewart of the Yankees isn't known for his batting, but striking out after only two strikes has to be a new offensive low.
That's right. A two-strike strikeout, and Stewart did it to himself.
Stewart stepped up to the plate, and after he didn't connect on the first three pitches, he walked back to the Yankee dugout. Stewart said he thought the first pitch was a strike, explaining why he walked off early.
"(The umpire) said something the first pitch, and I thought he called it a strike," Stewart told mlb.com's Bryan Hoch after the game. "I assumed it was 0-1; I fouled a ball off and I swung and missed at a ball. No one said anything; the umpire didn't say anything, so I just came on back to the dugout and put my stuff away."
Stewart didn't realize what happened; the umpire, Jim Wolf, didn't ask him to come back on, and the Orioles definitely weren't going to say anything — thus ending in a bizarre two-strike strikeout.
