MAGNA — Police arrested a man Thursday night who they say led them on more than one high-speed chase in the space of a week.

Around 10 p.m., an officer saw a BMW swerving on state Route 201. The officer tried to stop the car, but the man, identified as Mark Leonard West, 55, drove on, said Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal.

He exited the highway around 9200 West in Magna, Hoyal said, and shortly afterward tried to hit an officer who attempted to lay down spikes on the road.

The pursuit continued into a nearby neighborhood where he crashed into a yard. Police cars surrounded his vehicle and West backed into a police car before trying to flee on foot, Hoyal said. At that point, an officer deployed a Taser and arrested him.

West was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of several potential charges, including aggravated assault, fleeing from an officer, causing property damage and bodily injury, possession of stolen property, possession of marijuana, theft, driving under the influence of alcohol and more.

Hoyal said West is also suspected of being involved in incidents in Taylorsville in the week preceding the chase, including a police pursuit, vandalism and terrorizing a clerk at a Conoco.
