SANDY — A hiker was in serious condition Monday night after falling an estimated 100 feet in Bell Canyon.
The 23-year-old man suffered leg and wrist injuries, as well as minor head injuries, but is lucky he wasn't hurt worse, Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said.
"It's a pretty steep area, a waterfall area, that he was in, and he took a pretty good, straight-down fall," Hoyal said. "We're very fortunate that his injuries weren't worse."
Rescue crews from Unified Police, Sandy Fire and Salt Lake County search and rescue carried the man down the canyon to an area where Life Flight could land and transport him to Intermountain Medical Center.
Rescue crews made a long trek to get the man off the mountain, Hoyal said. He was alert and talking to rescuers as he was being transported.
The man was hiking the canyon near the lower falls with a friend, who called police to report the fall about 3:30 p.m.
