We are going to have to give it everything we got to get out. It's a deep hole and getting deeper. I'm not going to quit. – Ben Roethlisberger, Steelers quarterback
The NFL finished up week three on Monday night, which gave a better feel for each team in the league and displayed some furious finishes, as well as some blowouts.
Throughout the league, there were fantastic headlines, as well as some disappointing ones. With another NFL week now checked off the calendar, here's a look at the best and worst headlines of week three.
Best: Peyton Manning and the Broncos remain perfect
With a win over their division rival on "Monday Night Football," the Denver Broncos improved to 3-0 this season, making it 14 straight regular season games they have won.
Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning has thrown for 12 touchdowns and no interceptions in the first three games of this season, making him the first quarterback in NFL history to do so. Denver has also scored a total of 127 points this season, the most by any team in the first three games since 1968.
The Broncos look to improve to 4-0 on Sunday when they host the Philadelphia Eagles.
Worst: Eli Manning and the Giants need answers
The New York Giants are a desperate football team at this point in the season. After their devastating 38-0 loss to the Carolina Panthers, there doesn't seem to be anything positive about the Giants this year. The Panthers sacked Giants quarterback Eli Manning five times in only the first quarter and ended with seven, which tied a franchise record for Carolina.
Eli Manning currently leads the NFL in interceptions thrown and is tied with Brandon Weeden and Michael Vick for second in the NFL in times sacked.
Unless big changes are made, the Giants are going to be in for a long day against the 3-0 Kansas City Chiefs this Sunday.
Best: The Miami Dolphins' surprise tour continues
After losing Reggie Bush this offseason, many assumed that the Miami Dolphins were in for another below-average season. However, the Dolphins surprised everyone once again on Sunday as they defeated the Atlanta Falcons 27-23. The Atlanta Falcons were tied with the Denver Broncos for the best record in the NFL in 2012, which makes the win for the Dolphins even more impressive.
With the win over Atlanta, the Dolphins remain undefeated, as well as making a statement in the NFL. With wins over both Indianapolis and Atlanta, the Dolphins have displayed that they can win games against proven opponents.
Miami suits up again on "Monday Night Football" as it heads to New Orleans to face the Saints.
Worst: The 49ers lose Aldon Smith
After being arrested for a second time for a DUI, ESPN reports that 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith has been admitted into rehab. There is no timetable on when he may return to San Francisco, but many suspect that it will be at least a month.
This is a huge blow for the 49ers team, which has dropped both of its last two games. Smith is one of the best pass rushers in the league, and his presence will be sorely missed.
Best: Trent Richardson makes Colts debut
In the days leading up to week three, the Cleveland Browns traded running back Trent Richardson to the Indianapolis Colts, a team in desperate need of a running game.
Richardson didn't disappoint either, as his first carry as a member of the Colts was a touchdown. With his presence, as well as teammate Ahmad Bradshaw's, the Colts were able to defeat the defending NFC champions, the San Francisco 49ers, in a 27-7 win.
With the victory, the Colts become the first team to defeat the 49ers in San Francisco when Colin Kaepernick is the 49ers' starter.
Worst: The Steelers' ship is sinking fast
For a team that has been so dominant in the AFC in the past decade, it appears that the old adage of the straw that broke the camel's back is happening before the NFL's eyes. What is the straw? The turnover margin. The Pittsburgh Steelers are tied with the New York Giants for last in the NFL in turnover margin with a -9. Their defense can't seem to force any turnovers, and their offense seems more than happy to hand them to the other team.
With a loss against the Bears on Sunday night, the Steelers fall to 0-3, a record they haven't had in more than a decade. Pittsburgh's running game has been atrocious, and without a running game, play-action plays are pretty much useless.
Still, despite the vision of the entire season being an embarrassment looming before his eyes, Steelers' quarterback Ben Roethlisberger hasn't thrown in the towel.
“We are going to have to give it everything we got to get out,” Roethlisberger told triblive.com. “It's a deep hole and getting deeper. I'm not going to quit.”
Best: The Chiefs continue to shock the NFL
After winning only two games in 2012 and finishing with the worst record in the NFL, the Kansas City Chiefs hired coach Andy Reid and traded for quarterback Alex Smith, hoping that it would be just what they needed to turn their football program around. It appears that they found the perfect combination to win in the NFL.
With a win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday, the Chiefs improved to a perfect 3-0, already surpassing their entire win total of 2012.
Alex Smith hasn't thrown an interception all year, joining Peyton Manning and Jake Locker as the only starting quarterbacks in the NFL with no interceptions. Smith's game-managing abilities are exactly what the Chiefs need, and his relationship with Andy Reid makes the chemistry even more of a perfect fit.
Look for the Chiefs' defense to have a field day on Sunday against the 0-3 Giants.
Worst: Robert Griffin III, Redskins fall to 0-3
At the beginning of the season, many picked the Washington Redskins to win the NFC East division and contend in the playoffs. As of right now, the Redskins haven't proved they belong in the NFL, let alone playoff discussion.
With a 27-20 loss against Detroit on Sunday, the Redskins fall to 0-3, a start that doesn't bode well for their playoff hopes. Despite the terrible start, quarterback Robert Griffin III looks like he is starting to shake off a bit of the rust, as he is improving game after game.
Still, even if Griffin is going to catch his groove and perform similar to his play last year, a 0-3 start is a tough hole to climb out of, and definitely one he never predicted that they would be in.
"If you told us we'd be 0-3 right now, we'd all be shocked," Griffin told sbnation. "We played better today, but we didn't get the win."
The Redskins head to Oakland on Sunday to play the Raiders.
Best: Tom Brady keeps Patriots afloat
After losing their top wide receiver, Danny Amendola, and pro-bowl tight end Rob Gronkowski to injuries, the Patriots' offense appeared to have been stripped of all weapons. Tom Brady however, has the unique ability to create weapons himself. His newest creation, undrafted rookie Kenbrell Thompkins, caught two touchdowns in the Patriots' win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
With the win, the Patriots miraculously stay undefeated at 3-0. With his young receivers beginning to look smoother, perhaps the Patriots will be tough to stop this year after all. With Gronkowski returning in the next couple of weeks, the Patriots are only going to get better.
The Patriots will be put to the test in week four as they head to Atlanta to play the Falcons.
Worst: The Jaguars can't do anything right
With a loss against the Seahawks, the Jacksonville Jaguars drop to 0-3. They just look totally and completely out of sync. Their star running back, Maurice Jones-Drew, is playing with an injury, and no matter who they play at the quarterback position, they throw interceptions.
The Jaguars just don't have any weapons on offense, and in order to save their season, someone will have to light the spark. Otherwise, the Jaguars may go 0-16 this year.
Like any week in the NFL, week three had a lot of ups and a lot of downs. With teams like the Broncos on pace to break offensive records, and teams like the Giants on pace to break turnover records, week four should be every bit as interesting.
