KHARTOUM, Sudan — Sudanese protesters have taken to the streets across the capital and other key cities, some chanting for the ouster of President Omar al-Bashir, despite a crackdown on an eruption of protests this week that rights groups say killed at least 50 people.
One crowd marched Friday from a mosque in Khartoum's flashpoint Omdurman district, a longtime opposition stronghold. Security forces were deployed nearby on pick-up trucks mounted with machine guns.
Other protests took place in in Wad Madani, the capital of el-Gezira state about 130 kilometers (80 miles) southeast of the capital, where protests first erupted earlier this week, according to activist photos online.
Activists called for Friday's demonstrations in response to the security forces' crackdown on protests this week, originally sparked by anger over cuts in fuel subsidies.
