SALT LAKE CITY — The Westminster College men’s soccer team closed out the home portion of its schedule with a 1-0 win over 23rd-ranked Cal State San Marcos on Sunday afternoon at Dumke Field.
Westminster (5-6) sent its seven seniors out in fashion with the upset victory. It was one of those seniors, Jordan Conroy, that made the Griffins a winner. Conroy got his head on a corner kick from Manuel Duenas and redirected it into the net for his first goal of the season.
After the game went into intermission with Cal State San Marcos (6-3-2) holding a 5-4 edge in shots, the Cougars came out in the second half more assertive and finished the game outshooting the Griffins, 15-9. Westminster limited those 15 shots to only six on goal, while putting four of its shots on frame.
Connor Thompson led the Griffins with three shot attempts and two shots on goal. Ryan Smith and Anthony Alcox finished with two shots apiece.
Logan Butzier earned his fifth win and fourth shutout of the season by making six saves.
The Griffins will now close out the regular season with six straight games away from home. That road swing begins with a game at Ashford (Iowa) on Saturday at 11 a.m.
