SALT LAKE CITY — A man cleaning out a family member's home Monday found a mortar-type shell in the garage of the unoccupied house, police said.

Police responded to 450 N. Chaz Court (1580 West) at 3:45 p.m. and called in the hazardous device unit. Salt Lake City police detective Cody Lougy said it looked like an inactive training grenade, but precautions were still taken.

The bomb squad determined the object to be a mortar-type shell and declared it safe for transport. Police said specialists didn't know at the time if the object, likely a World War II-era ordnance, was inert. The object was taken to a remote area for further evaluation.
