Picturing history: Zion’s Camp prairie settlement near Norborne, Mo.

As the group known as Zion"™s Camp worked its way through the heat and humidity of Carroll County, Mo., in 1834, its members experienced some dissent amongst themselves as they planned to set up camp on the night of June 17. The Prophet Joseph Smith wanted to camp up on the vast plain. This would give the Saints the ability to see anyone coming for miles, so they would have time to prepare for what might follow. Others in the group argued that they should camp in a ravine of sorts closer to much-needed water. Their feelings were strong enough that they went off by themselves for a time but finally rejoined the Prophet and the main body of the camp members.
