CLEARFIELD — A Kaysville man died from his injuries after being hit by a truck that was backing down a business loading ramp.

Police responded to the accident at 8:22 a.m. Monday at building F7 of the Freeport Center, according to Clearfield Assistant Police Chief Mike Stenquist.

Robert Benton, 67, had been run over by a Ford pickup that was backing down a shared loading ramp. Benton owns Benton Packaging, located in building E4 of the Freeport Center, and was hit on a ramp the company shares with Freeport West Storage, according to police.

The man driving the Ford pickup works for Freeport West Storage. The man told police he did not see Benton. It is unclear what Benton was doing on the ramp and whether he was standing or already on the ground when he was run over, Stenquist said.

Benton was treated at the scene and taken to a local hospital with leg and shoulder injuries, police said. Once at the hospital, personnel found that Benton had sustained internal chest injuries.

"We didn't expect the injuries to be that serious," Stenquist said.

Benton died from his injuries at 12:13 a.m. Tuesday, police said.

Clearfield police, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Utah State Medical Examiner's Office are looking into the incident.
