TOOELE — A man working for a brine shrimp company in Tooele County died in an ATV accident over the weekend.
The 26-year-old man was riding an ATV back to camp off Stansbury Island Road about 6 p.m. when he crashed, dying instantly, Tooele County Sheriff's Sgt. Eric McCollum said.
Police have not released the name of the man, who was a refugee, because they have been unable to locate next of kin, McCollum said.
Speed was an obvious contributor in the fatal crash, McCollum said. The man appeared to have driven off the right side of the road, where he hit an embankment and was thrown from the machine.
The man's head hit a rock, cracking his helmet and killing him. The man's body traveled nearly 30 more feet before coming to a stop, and the ATV traveled more than 170 feet, McCollum said.
A co-worker traveling back to camp spotted a light from the ATV off the side of the road and discovered the crash about 15 minutes later.
